How B100
is Made

01

Rapeseed

France is the leading European producer of rapeseed, neck-and-neck with Germany and ahead of Poland. Europe is the world’s leading producer (over 21.5 million tons), ahead of Canada and China. Rapeseed is an essential break crop and a vital culture for the balance of a farm. It is generally grown in rotation with wheat, barley, or sometimes corn every 4 to 5 years on the same plot.

02

Crushing

Crushing is a grinding operation for oil extraction. Oil production generates 44% oil and 56% oil cake. Rapeseed oil cake is used in livestock feed due to its protein content, representing a good alternative to imported meal.

03

Transformation into Biodiesel

Biodiesel production requires transesterification (or esterification) of the oil to result in rapeseed oil methyl ester + B100. This technique consists of transforming the oil’s triglycerides into methyl esters. More specifically, transesterification is a chemical process that removes glycerol from vegetable oils. It is a very widespread process in Europe: 5 plants in France and over 35 in other European countries have been producing rapeseed biodiesel for more than 10 years.

04

Distribution

Europe produces more than 5 million m3 of B100, of which 1.4 million m3 is produced by France. Altens is committed to promoting the use of alternative fuels like PUR100 (B100). We implement optimal logistics across France by developing PUR100 storage sites along strategic routes (currently 5 distribution storage sites cover the country).

05

On the Road!

Today, Renault Trucks, Volvo, MAN, and Scania offer B100-compatible EURO 6 vehicles. Either the vehicle is purchased new with B100 approval, or the vehicle is made B100-compatible after modification at a dealership with a “retrofit” kit covered by Altens. B100 vehicles benefit from exceptional tax depreciation upon purchase, from 40 to 60% depending on the vehicle’s GVWR.
